I tapered almost four weeks for this race bringing down the volume for this almost half-ironman distance, I can't say I went into this race feeling amazing, and maybe the forty km ride on the course the day before was too much. I got to the start line ready for this 2 km swim in big swells which is not common here in Thailand, but with the seasons changing, anything is possible.
I took to the start line next to the athletes i knew I needed to swim with, had an excellent clean start getting out the front earl and holding the pace, turning the head every stroke to the left to avoid drinking water, swimming around the island one km offshore the swell has heavy still in front at this stage with someone on my toes the whole way getting a free ride I decided to slow down the pace and hopefully get a little draft if someone past me, but no one did until the last three hundred metres, I came out this swim feeling dehydrated and very hot with the water temp high, I fumbled around in T1 for too long and lost touch with first place, second place was only one hundred metres infront my HR was still high so opted to go easy for the first few km, losing touch from the second place I just rode my race, at sixty km my body was starting to cramp and my feet so sore, I had my core nutrition perfect with the right amount of carbs but coming in to dismount at 80kms standing on the left pedal, my leg almost collapsed with a cramp. Did I mention at this stage it was well and truly forty degrees and humid as fuck? I sat in transition to put socks on with my legs semi-cramping. I knew I was in trouble. I started the run super slow and thought, how will I finish? I did not complete a race (except when my foot fractured in a race back in 2020), so I needed to get it done today, and man, it was hell. You can't explain this feeling of pure exhaustion and the body shutting down; I didn't give up, only walking the aid stations tipping water on my head and getting some core nutrition in; my average pace was so embarrassing slow the heat around midmorning was 46 and roasting, I wanted to quit. Still, I had to keep going, coming over the line at a disappointing time of 5:07. I was done, cooked, could hardly speak, and was on the verge of muscles cramping everywhere.
Now to go away and work out some weaknesses before the next event and, next time, have a longer taper:)
Big thanks to Core nutrition for the support.
